Minnesota insurance questions. Straight answers.
Why is my homeowners insurance going up in Minnesota?
Mostly hail and severe storms. Minnesota's costliest storm year, 2022, caused about $6.3 billion in property damage, and a single hailstorm on August 11, 2023 topped $1 billion. Add higher rebuilding costs, and premiums here have risen faster than almost anywhere in the country since 2023, even for homeowners who have never filed a claim.
What you can control: your deductibles, bundling home and auto, your roof (Minnesota law requires insurers to give a premium discount for homes built or retrofitted to IBHS FORTIFIED roof standards), and a dwelling limit that matches real rebuild cost. We offer a free coverage review before your renewal — just ask, or we'll reach out.
How much is home insurance in Minnesota?
It depends on your home, roof, deductible, and claims history, so treat any average as a rough guide. Insurify's standardized estimate for a $300,000 home in Minnesota is roughly $2,700 a year, and other sources land higher or lower depending on how they measure. Wisconsin runs noticeably lower, about $1,500 a year on the same estimate.
Our rate estimator below gives you a ballpark in seconds. For your real number, we quote your home and auto together, since bundling usually lowers both.
What is a wind/hail percentage deductible?
More Minnesota policies now carry a separate wind and hail deductible figured as a percentage of your home's insured value, often 1% to 2% or more, instead of a flat dollar amount. On a home insured for $400,000, a 2% deductible means $8,000 out of pocket before coverage responds to a hail or wind claim.
Under a 2024 Minnesota law, an insurer moving you to a percentage deductible must give you 60 days' notice with a worked dollar example and offer at least one flat-dollar option. We'll show you where yours sits and what it would cost to change it.
Does homeowners insurance cover ice dams, frozen pipes, or sewer backup?
Ice dams and frozen pipes: usually, yes. Standard homeowners policies cover most freeze damage, like a burst pipe or water from an ice dam, plus damage from the weight of snow and ice, as long as you've taken reasonable care such as keeping the heat on.
Sewer and drain backup is a different story. It isn't covered by a standard homeowners or renters policy, or by flood insurance. It's added as an endorsement, and if you have a finished basement it deserves a close look. We'll check whether your policy has it.
Do I need flood insurance in Minnesota?
If you live near a river, lake, or low ground, it's worth a serious look. A standard homeowners policy doesn't cover flood, and Minnesota law requires insurers to remind you of that with an annual flood notice. Flood is a separate policy, written through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) or a private flood insurer.
Spring snowmelt and heavy summer rain both cause flooding here, and a large share of flood claims come from outside high-risk zones. NFIP policies cover up to $250,000 for the building and $100,000 for contents, with a typical 30-day waiting period, so buy before the thaw, not during it.
Is Minnesota a no-fault state?
Yes. Every Minnesota auto policy includes no-fault coverage, called personal injury protection (PIP) or basic economic loss benefits, with a minimum of $40,000 per person: $20,000 for medical expenses and $20,000 for non-medical losses like lost income. Your own policy pays those benefits first, no matter who caused the crash.
You can still sue the at-fault driver for pain and suffering once you pass the tort threshold: medical expenses over $4,000, or a permanent injury, permanent disfigurement, death, or disability of 60 days or more. Wisconsin works differently: it's an at-fault state.
Is Minnesota's minimum auto coverage enough?
Rarely. Minnesota requires 30/60/10 liability: $30,000 per injured person, $60,000 per accident, and just $10,000 for property damage, plus no-fault PIP and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage of $25,000/$50,000. That $10,000 won't replace most vehicles on the road today.
About 1 in 9 Minnesota drivers is uninsured, so higher UM/UIM limits matter too. Full-coverage auto in Minnesota now commonly runs over $2,000 a year, which is why we size coverage to what you actually have to protect, then look for bundle and multi-policy savings.
Do you write policies in Wisconsin?
Yes. Ryan Block is licensed in both Minnesota and Wisconsin, so we can help households in western Wisconsin communities like Hudson and River Falls, plus families with property in both states.
The rules differ. Wisconsin is an at-fault state with 25/50/10 minimum liability and required uninsured motorist coverage of $25,000/$50,000; underinsured motorist coverage is optional. We'll walk you through what changes on the Wisconsin side.
Can you shop carriers other than Farmers?
We're a Farmers Insurance agency first, and Farmers home and auto is where we start. That national backing is a big part of what we offer.
When Farmers isn't the right fit for a particular need, we can also shop additional carriers, so you're not starting over somewhere else. Either way, you keep the same local office and the same point of contact.
Do you offer service in Spanish?
